TREASURES OF SWITZERLAND
Day One: Arrival On arrival at Zurich Airport, you will be met by your Private Guide and escorted to your hotel in Interlaken by car or train. This evening there will be a special ‘Welcome to Switzerland’ dinner at the hotel.
Day Two: Grindelwald/Lauterbrunnen Take the train up the valley this morning with your Guide to Lauterbrunnen and the mighty Trummelbach Falls. Later, travel to delightful Grindelwald, in the shadow of the mighty Eiger mountain. An afternoon at leisure in Interlaken will allow you to get better acquainted with this charming little town.
Day Three: Berne and the Emmental The Emmental is famed for its cheese, and as part of today’s tour you will visit a dairy and sample some of the renowned cheese. Later, continue into Berne, capital of Switzerland, for a brief sightseeing tour of the city and some free time to discover the wonderful shops. Return to Interlaken by train .
Day Four; Lake Brienz Drive along the shores of Lake Brienz today, through tranquil villages and lovely countryside to Brienz, home of the local woodcarving industry. Visit one of the woodcarvers’ workshops and see masterpieces taking shape. Continue to Ballenberg to enjoy a visit to the Open Air Museum, where historic buildings from all over Switzerland have been recreated in a woodland setting. Journey back to Interlaken by boat; a delightful cruise which will show you parts of the lakeland scenery inaccessible by road.
Day Five: Montreux and Gruyères Travel through the lovely Simmental this morning, delighting in the rural scenery and mountain backdrop. You will visit Gstaad, Winter home of the jet-set, and Gruyeres, a Medieval town in the mountains which has retained its ancient character. Continue then to Lake Geneva for a visit to the Castle of Chillon, made famous by the poetry of Lord Byron. Continue to the lakeside resort of Montreux and check into your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day Six: Lake Geneva excursion Take the train into Geneva this morning, for a private city-tour including views of the Cathedral, the Water Fountain, the Rose Gardens, the Russian Church and the Reformation Monument. Time at leisure for your own interests before continuing across the border into France, to see the southern shore of Lake Geneva, including the delightful picture-book town of Yvoire and the gracious spa of Evian. Return to Montreux for dinner and overnight.
Day Seven: To Zermatt Drive to Martigny and Sion for brief visits en route to Zermatt today. The little car-free village at the foot of the Matterhorn is one of the best-known of the mountain resorts and you will enjoy some time at leisure to explore the village this afternoon prior to dinner at the hotel.
Day Eight; Zermatt Joinyour guide on the trip to the top of the Gornergrat this morning. This is the highest rack railway in Europe and from the top there is a spectacular view of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa, the highest mountain in Switzerland. The choice of whether to take the train back down to the village, or hike along the scenic trails, is up to you. The afternoon is at leisure for your own interests.
Day Nine; The Glacier Express Today you will take one of the most spectacular rail journeys in the world; the Glacier Express, which crosses the mountains from the Wallis valley to the heights of Graubunden, and the famous resort of St. Moritz. This will be your home for the next two nights.
Day Ten; St Moritz A day at leisure in this famous resort today. We can arrange a day trip into the stunningly beautiful mountains, with a horse-drawn carriage ride and lunch in a country inn as a highlight.
Day Eleven; Zurich and Lake Lucerne Drive over the spectacular Julier Pass this morning and continue to Zurich, where you will enjoy a city-tour and a chance to explore the city’s fine stores. Later, drive to the shores of Lake Lucerne and check into your hotel for the next two nights.
Day Twelve; Lucerne and Pilatus An early start this morning as you ascend Mount Pilatus via the funicular railway for a fabulous panorama of the lakes and mountains. Later, continue into Lucerne for a city sightseeing drive and then free time to explore the shops and museums. Return to your Lake Lucerne hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day Thirteen: Departure An early start from Lake Lucerne this morning as you travel to Zurich for your return flight.
